California Battery Recycling Program Update

Jun 11, 2026 Products

At Somfy, we are committed to supporting responsible recycling and sustainability initiatives.

As part of California Senate Bill 1215, certain electronic products with embedded batteries are now subject to a state-mandated Covered Battery-Embedded Waste Recycling Fee. This fee took effect on January 1, 2026 and helps fund California’s collection and recycling infrastructure for products containing batteries at the end of their useful life.

What this means for retailers:

  • The fee applies to certain electronic products containing batteries that are not easily removable by consumers.
  • The recycling fee is collected at the point of sale and appears as a separate line item on the receipt.
  • The current fee established by CalRecycle is 1.5% of the retail sales price, not to exceed $15 per item.
  • Funds collected support safe recycling and proper end-of-life management of battery-containing products throughout California.
  • This fee is established and administered by the State of California and is not retained by Somfy or our retail partners.

Why was this law created?

Lithium-ion and other embedded batteries can create safety risks when disposed of improperly, including fires in waste collection and recycling facilities. SB 1215 was enacted to promote safer battery recycling, reduce environmental impact, and support responsible product stewardship.

For Somfy customers, this program helps ensure that battery-containing products are responsibly managed and recycled at the end of their useful life while supporting California’s broader sustainability goals.

Together, we can help build a safer and more sustainable future.
